So here's the thing about most hostels: Its like a dorm room. If you are used to that or any camp like environment you should be fine! Stay at a hostel, save some money and use the money you will save to better experience the culture. How much time will you really be spending at the place (the ideal answer is very little as you should be out travelling!) Some people get freaked out, but every experience I have had with a hostel has been great and you meet interesting people this way.

YOUR STAY: I would always recommend bringing a towel and mini toiletries. Hostels stay cheap by passing on some of the amenities available in bigger hotels. Also, if at all possible, take a friend with you. Hostels can be awkward with so many people around so having a friend can help break the ice. Usually the people who run the hostels are super friendly and nice so ask for their help, that's what they are there for!
